What Is Arbitrage Betting?
Arbitrage betting (or "arbing") exploits differences in odds between sportsbooks to guarantee profit regardless of the outcome. When the combined implied probability of all outcomes is less than 100%, an arbitrage opportunity exists.
📐 The Arbitrage Formula
Arb % = (1/Decimal Odds A) + (1/Decimal Odds B)
If Arb % < 100%, you have an arbitrage opportunity. The profit = 100% - Arb %
How Arbitrage Works
Different sportsbooks often have different opinions on the same event. Book A might favor Team 1, while Book B favors Team 2. By betting the opposite sides at each book, you can lock in profit.
Example
Book A offers Team 1 at +150 (40% implied). Book B offers Team 2 at -130 (56.5% implied). Combined = 96.5%. That's a 3.5% arbitrage opportunity—guaranteed profit no matter who wins.
Finding Arbitrage Opportunities
Where to Look
- Live betting — Odds move fast, creating temporary arbs
- Prop bets — Less efficient markets with more variance
- Minor sports — Books pay less attention to smaller markets
- Between offshore and US books — Different pricing models
Tools for Finding Arbs
Manual arb hunting is tedious. Most serious arb bettors use odds comparison sites or dedicated arb-finding software that scans hundreds of books in real-time.
⚠️ Risks of Arbitrage Betting
Account limits: Sportsbooks don't like arbers and will limit/ban accounts that consistently arb.
Odds changes: Odds can move before you place both bets, eliminating the arb.
Timing: You need to place bets quickly and simultaneously.
Typical Arbitrage Profit Margins
| Arb Type | Typical Margin | Frequency | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-game spreads | 0.5-2% | Rare | Low |
| Pre-game moneylines | 1-3% | Occasional | Low |
| Live betting | 2-5% | Common | Medium |
| Player props | 2-8% | Common | Medium |
| Offshore books | 3-10%+ | Frequent | Higher |
💡 Pro Tip
Start with larger arb margins (3%+) while you learn. Smaller margins leave less room for error. Also, always have accounts funded at multiple sportsbooks so you can act fast when opportunities appear.
