Line Movement & Reverse Line Movement

Lesson 2 of 6

What is Line Movement?

Line movement is when a sportsbook adjusts odds or point spreads based on where money is going.

Lines Move Because Of:

  • Heavy public betting
  • Sharp (professional) bettors making large bets
  • New information (injuries, weather)

1 How to Read Line Movements

  • Opening Line: Where odds/spread start
  • Current Line: Where they are now
  • Direction: Did line move toward or away from a team?

Example

Opening: Team A -3

Now: Team A -4.5

Interpretation: Money coming in on Team A, spread moved higher.

2 Sharp Money vs. Public Money

Public MoneySharp Money
Based on emotion/hypeBased on analysis and value
Follows favorites and popular teamsOften bets underdogs, contrarian
Doesn't move lines muchMoves lines significantly
High volume, small betsLarge bets, selective plays

3 What is Reverse Line Movement (RLM)?

When the line moves against the side getting more public bets.

RLM Example

70% of bets on Team A

Line moves from Team A -7 to -6.5

Interpretation: Sharp money on Team B (despite public on Team A)

Why RLM Matters

Shows where sharp bettors see value. Often indicates a good contrarian betting opportunity.

4 How to Spot RLM

📋 RLM Detection Process

  1. Check betting percentages (public %)
  2. Compare opening line vs. current line
  3. If public heavy on one side but line moves opposite = RLM

Pro Tip:

Use Action Network, VSIN, or Odds Shark to track betting percentages.

5 Using Line Movement to Bet Smarter

  • Identify sharp sides (where pros are betting)
  • Avoid trap lines (designed to lure public)
  • Find value on underdogs or unpopular teams

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Chasing line moves without understanding why
  • Betting because "everyone else is"
  • Ignoring context (injuries, weather)

  • I understand what line movement means
  • I can differentiate sharp vs. public money
  • I know what RLM is and how to spot it
